Samsung Galaxy Tab

Average User Ratings

galaxy tabThe Samsung Galaxy Tab has definitely sent shock waves through the world of Apple. It is official now. The iPad now has a valid competitor. In this era of cyberspace communication, web browsing speed is the name of the game. A pad can look good, feel great in the palm of your hand and have excellent game graphics, but if it isn’t up to speed, it isn’t worth the money, right? Hardware always counts.

The Galaxy Tab can definitely stand up to the big guys. The Galaxy at only 7.4×4.7 inches is the smallest of computer tablets. However, image viewing and speed are not compromised in the least. The exceptional 7-inch screen is designed for reading books and magazines, watching movies, playing games, and more.

The original Galaxy Tab comes with a 3G network and 32GB storage capacity. It also has Google’s powerful Android 2.2 OS known as Froyo. But here’s the real news. It features 512 MB of RAM, compared to the iPad’s 256 MB. In comparing the ARM Cortex A8 processor in the Galaxy to the iPad’s Apple A4processor, the Galaxy Tab is the winner hands down.

Enabled for all four wireless providers: T-Mobile, Sprint, At & T and Verizon high-speed 3G networks, the Galaxy Tab offers fast data delivery and an enhanced Web-browsing experience that lets you connect quickly to social networking sites. And the 3G-enabled Galaxy Tab will benefit from the enhanced speeds of the carriers HSPA+ network.

For example, on Sprint’s network the Galaxy Tab is amazingly fast. It is the fastest Android device tested especially when it came to loading Web pages and switching between tasks. The Tab with its 1.2GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird application processor blazes through apps. Many reviewers of the Tab have been surprised that this Android could beat Apple.

It gets better. Both Sprint and Verizon have introduced their 4G LTE Galazy Tab for 2011. In a recent showing in Las Vegas, the new 4G Tab proved to be ten times faster than the 3G version that first debuted. Not only that, it is at least a hundred dollars cheaper if you sign up for a two year contract with Sprint or Verizon.

While Verizon’s 4G network covers only about one third of the US in comparison to its 3G, that is quickly being remedied. Within the next two to three years, all of Verizon’s network of 93 million customers in the US will be 4G. The speed of the 3G Galaxy Tab is one reason Verizon decided to invest in the Samsung’ Galaxy Tab. Now with the new 4G, the speed leaves Apple’s iPad behind.

T-Mobile, is already up and running with its 4G My Touch. The 3G Galaxy Tab is hardly a disappointment to T-Mobile customers. It will have access to T-Mobile Qik Video Chat and WiFi sharing features without any problems, making it the fastest by far. You’ll be able to pay the way you want with prepaid and postpaid data plans from T-Mobile Pay As You Go.

AT&T will sell the Galaxy Tab with monthly data plans like those offered for Apple’s iPad tablet. A 16GB AT&T Galaxy Tab Wi-Fi+ 3G will cost $21 more than a similarly configured iPad. There will also be a preinstalled AT&T Account Manager app for handling activation and usage on the device. AT&T will also load the eReading with Nook app.

Because of its connections with Google, the Galaxy Tab offers fast referencing and web browsing. You can smart search in a blink with Google Search, pull up Google Maps in a flash, and utilize G-talk without much lag time at all. It offers faster access as well. The Samsung Social Hub lets you access emails, contacts, social networks and appointments along with Google’s calendar app. Considering the amount of time people spend online today, being able to quickly access what they need is a must have that the Galaxy Tab can definitely deliver.

There is also gaming. Not only does the 1024×600 pixel resolution keep the screen images sharp, the games run with little or no drag as do most of the hundreds of thousands of Android apps which are constantly being updated. Uploading is fast as well. When it comes to lightening fast speed, the Galaxy Tab is answering the call for speed.

What users are saying about the Galaxy Tab (T-Mobile):

As a current iPad owner who also uses the Droid X,  after spending 15 minutes with the Galaxy Tab,  I absolutely love it. The size is fantastic in that its a significantly improved viewing experience over the 4.3 inch Droid X screen (which is also great) and it is easy to hold with one hand and navigate with the other – an added bonus is that it also fits in a suit coat pocket.  The screen is gorgeous, speed is quick and the Google location services (GPS, Latitude, Maps, Place and the list goes on and on) are fantastic.

The Microsoft Exchange integration with email/calendar/contacts is seamless and allows for almost all of the functionality provided via a laptop. One of the drawbacks of the iPad is its poor integration with Outlook (couldn’t delete, move emails while one a plane working offline – not a problem with the Tab).  I would highly recommend this product (G. Stuart).    Review paraphrased for size – Click here to view the original review.

Another user stated:

A beautiful product EXCEPT T-mobile has disabled the telephone. When you install a T-mobile SIM card you cannot make a voice call. If you pay to have this tablet unlocked you still cannot make a voice call with any carrier’s SIM.
This  item is sold under the banner of Cell Phones and Accessories, but it cannot make or receive a call.  Also if you unlock the unit you still won’t have phone service. But now you will be denied phone service regardless of whose SIN you use.

If you want to use the phone feature of the Galaxy, buy the European model which is often sold as “unlocked” (here “unlocked means “never locked). If you don’t need a phone and have access to WiFi wait a few weeks for the forthcoming WiFi only model and save hundreds of dollars – but you will not be able to use 3g or 4g (D. Ostrower).   Review paraphrased for size – Click here to view the original review.

What users are saying about the Galaxy Tab (AT & T):

Voice/Video Calls: I’ve downloaded both Fring and Skype on my Tab to make voice calls or video calls (I’m using WiFi for this). Both apps are loaded in the “Market” app of the Tab. Free calls to other signed up/members. Some charges apply to non Fring or Skype folks. Its all explained in their respective web sites.

AT&T has excellent on-line Galaxy Tab tutorials and a download of the user’s manual. Check out the Galaxy Tab’s specs and all it has to offer. If any or all of the features appeal to your liking, BUY ONE! I highly recommend this product. For the Naysayers out there: There is no such thing, or ever will be, a “perfect” product. Not even Einstein could find a Universal Theory.

Excerpt from CNET’s GT review (Oct 2010): (Inserted by reviewer) In fairness, what we enjoy most about the Galaxy Tab is that it’s not trying to exactly copy the iPad’s blueprint for success. Sure, Samsung’s notepad, calendar, and photo apps look like pixel-for-pixel reproductions of the iPad’s, but let’s not overlook the fact that the Tab is half the size of the iPad. It’s a different type of product that presents a different use case, one geared more for portability. That said, the Android smartphone market seems to cover a lot of this territory already. The Tab is also reaching out to all of the people who winced at the iPad’s lack of Adobe Flash support, video camera, memory expansion, and drag-and-drop file support. If these are the features that have been holding you back from purchasing a tablet, then the Tab should be a perfect match (P. Roscum). Review paraphrased for size – View original review here.
